What a shame! I’ve been a part-time employee of Gowanus Nursery since the beginning—when they first started out in Gowanus—and lately with their new digs in Red Hook.
To say that they are the best little nursery in Brooklyn is an understatement! They carry not only the most unusual annuals, perennials and shrubs in New York City but, have the feel of a botanic garden with their keen eye towards imaginative selections. (And the girls that work here forget it…)
Personally, my involvement with customers on weekends at this nursery has been of real therapeutic value. Seriously, I interact with people and plants (just kidding!) as in a social club for gardeners and plant aficionados. (Most of my co-workers here were originally customers before joining the club.)
To have something like this dismissed by City Planners and developers alike as ‘under-developed’ is absurd! If this proposed zoning change was to happen it would be a tragedy, especially to all the resident garden enthusiasts and plant lovers who have made it one of the most popular destinations in the Brooklyn area!!!
